In addition to your license, the Fuel Tax Unit will issue you a set of calendar-year decals for each qualified vehicle in your fleet, based on the number of qualified vehicles listed on your application.
You must attach one decal to each side of the vehicle’s cab, in the lower rear corner. For buses, one decal must be attached on each side, no further back than the rear of the driver’s seat, at eye level from the ground. If you do not display the identification decals in the required locations, you may be subject to a citation, a fine, or a penalty. In addition, you may be required to purchase fuel trip permits to travel into or through each member jurisdiction.
If you travel interstate before receiving your IFTA license and decals, you must purchase a fuel trip permit for each jurisdiction in which you travel.
All Colorado decals for a particular year are assigned to an account, not a particular vehicle—you may place any set of decals you are issued on any qualified vehicle in your IFTA fleet.
Decal Requests
Decal requests will only be approved for IFTA accounts in good standing. Your decals will be mailed to the mailing address on the account by USPS regular mail. Licensees can request expedited shipping options by FedEx by providing a FedEx account number and requesting overnight delivery. The FedEx account provided will be charged for the requested service.
In-person decal requests are currently only available for vehicles with new International Registration Plan (IRP) registrations. New IRP registrants will need to set up an appointment through the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website. Once you have an appointment with DMV, the DMW technician will complete the IRP transaction, and at the end of the IRP transaction a Taxation Division employee will assist you with your IFTA transaction.
Additional IFTA Decal Requests
You can request additional decals by contacting the Fuel Tax Unit. If the decal request is sent by email or mail, your IFTA account name and number must be provided. All requests must include a copy of the vehicle registration. Temporary county or dealer registrations are not accepted as qualified vehicles for IFTA purposes.
Replacement IFTA Decal Requests
To request replacement IFTA decals, submit a notarized Request for Replacement IFTA Decals (DR 7053). This form is required for accounts that did not receive their decals sent by mail, or decals that were lost or destroyed. Submit the form using any of the contact methods listed on the Fuel Tax Unit Contacts web page.
Vehicles Purchased Out of State
IFTA decals cannot be issued for a vehicle purchased out-of-state until it has a valid Colorado registration. This means trip permit fees will be assessed going through each state until the vehicle reaches Colorado. The vehicle will then have to pass inspection and be registered in Colorado before IFTA decals can be issued.
You must have a paper or electronic copy of the IFTA license available and decals placed on all vehicles in your IFTA fleet to be compliant with IFTA. Otherwise, you may be subject to a citation, a fine, or a penalty.
